The Central Railway in collaboration with the India Post has announced an individual scheme of pick-up and delivery of parcels. The following is done for the execution of first and last-mile connectivity from the point of origin to the customer’s doorstep. The unique initiative, taken earlier by the Central Railways during the COVID-19 outbreak and in collaboration with India Post, aims to enhance door to door services.
Even after the outbreak of the coronavirus, subsequently, this initiative was managed by the CR. The first and last-mile delivery services were first available between Nagpur to Mumbai. This was started by the India Post Railway Parcel Service, the Co-founders of the Central Railway, and Maharashtra Postal Circle.
This initiative was eventually extended by the authorities in the pressure of a good response from the consumers. Thus adding, Solapur, Kolhapur, Nashik, and Akola as newer consignee destinations for the services.
The talks to continue these services across PAN India continues. While speaking to the Deccan Herald, V K Yadav, Chairman of The Railway Board said, “It is basically door-to-door delivery of service. The Central Railways Zone in Mumbai have done a pilot project and we are planning to introduce this Pan-India. India Post staff will pick up and deliver consignment ( first and last-mile connectivity). The Railways will ferry the consignment for the longer route in its parcel trains”.
During the ongoing pandemic, the courier service; India Post has its dependence on The Indian Railways parcel trains for the transport of parcels. The dependence was due to various restrictions imposed on other modes of transport. The major items in the delivery system included ventilators, medicines, etc. in association with various pharmaceutical companies.
In the light of the pandemic, only certain categories of commuters, counting the ones providing essential services and women, can travel with the hold of a special pass. The COVID-19 protocols have been rigorously observed in railways regularly as later more categories of commuters were sanctioned; but as of now, full-scale travel stays frozen.
